Shell Series

Instant Memories

Remember the Polaroid Instant Camera? My family had one, though I don't think the kids ever got to use it, as it was the new technology and we were quite young at the time. But I do remember  waiting for those images to magically appear! And yes, we did shake those Polaroid pictures!!!  Fun though they were to take, those images didn't hold up well, the film was rather delicate and many images were ruined; smeared, or faded over time. And of course, was it just me, or did they all have a weird green cast to them?

Polaroid Instant Camera

Next, came my nifty Kodak Pocket Instamatic. I got this as a Christmas present when I was in my early teens, (What kid didn't have this one!?)and was happy to have a modern camera all my own. It was so easy to use and small enough to take anywhere.  With an  adapter that snapped onto the top, and  a little square flashbulb, (careful not to burn your fingers) indoor snapshots were possible. Then again, the indoor shots were not the best...RED EYES for everyone! So we looked like red-eyed aliens in our photos, who cared!?  I can't really say that this camera taught me much about photography--point and shoot, what fun! Still, I always wanted to get a great shot. So, I suppose  my compositions were getting better at least. I unofficially became the family photographer. I couldn't wait to get the film developed and layout the photos in our family album.

My First Camera

Reflections of Mill Pond
Photography by Colleen Kammerer
Photography has always been a passion of mine. From a young age I was fascinated with the idea that with just a quick click of the camera I had the power to freeze moments in time.

My first camera was a Brownie, a box-like camera with the view finder on top.  (wish I still had it....for nostalgia sake.) I remember taking endless pictures of family vacations,  trips to the beach and animals at the zoo. With each  "Click" I had a bit of my personal history recorded for all time! Insignificant though it may have been, my early days with my Brownie Camera had ignited a life long passion for my love of photography.
